Plurk Life

Ive been on plurk first before i signed up for twitter. But even if I signed up for twitter, I would prefer plurk over it due to what it offers me. A more interactive timeline, more fun interaction with other plurkers, and lastly i think because its just more fun to be on plurk.

Its easier to track your activites on plurk. You can easily see who responded to which plurk. No matter where you are in the timeline you wont have trouble figuring out what he/she said on a specific plurk.

Fun interaction is given on plurk, you got the emoticons to use and just show what you feel, what you want to do and just about anything to interact with others. Though I wish there could be more emoticons in the future. :D And the “like” and “replurk” feature is just nice. You can feel that value is given to what you have to say and its more evident. <3

And finally, on a personal note, with all the plurk features combined, I get to accomplish what I want from a social networking+micro-blogging service. Mainly because I read stuff, a lot of stuff from different sites across the world wide web. And most of the stuff I read, I want to share them because information is good. And this is where plurk comes in, from my Google Reader account, I get to share interesting/weird/helpful/fun/crazy/healthy (the works i tell you!) stuff to plurkiverse.

It just works! and I dont think I can ask for more from plurk, I know there are some other features that I havent mentioned like the cliques and IM integration. But purely for the sake of what I use, I dont think I would be trying to find an alternative to plurk.

Great Job Plurk! This one is for you! :D

My Web Got Chromed

How Google Chrome dethroned Mozilla Firefox on my system?

As far as I can remember, I have been using firefox way back since my college days. The tabbed interface and the number of extensions available for you to customize your browsing experience was such a sweet deal compared to the default browser that ships with the OS on most systems. For a time, all was good and fun until I decided to install Google Chrome alongside Firefox.

First Impressions Last

I was skeptic at first to try this plain looking browser because it was new and it doesn’t always mean good. Until I ran it for the first time. My initial impression was, its blazing fast! You just can’t help but notice this when you get used to running firefox on a daily basis. But wait until you’ve tried running Chrome, (oh scratch that) you dont have to wait at all. As of this writing, I tried running a fresh install of firefox 3.6.6 and it took 17 seconds to be at least web ready. I also tried to time Chrome’s startup, with extensions already installed, and it only took 5 seconds to boot and be usable. There is no doubt that once I installed my favorite extensions on Firefox, it might take longer to startup.

Icing on the cake

For a time, I was switching between firefox and chrome for web browsing, because Chrome did not have extensions when it first launched. Browser extensions helps in the web experience especially when you are usually online and the browser is a staple on your monitor.

My Firefox Setup

Until Google opened up the extensions gallery and came the flood of extensions that made the switch to Chrome more inevitable. That just made the deal sweeter for me. My current Chrome setup has all the necessary extensions I need for my online activites and more. Another thing that encouraged me is the minimal interface that Chrome has. It just gives you more real estate to look at. This is also possible in Firefox with some userchrome tweaks but its additional work. I came to love minimalism when it comes to interface and Chrome came with it out of the box.

Chromed!

The Browser War Goes On

For the purpose of this post, Firefox was the browser who brought something to the table, but Chrome just took it another level. Who knows? Firefox 4 could be something worth looking into, but for now its Chrome for me.

Google Chrome, its fast, it works and its loaded. There’s a lot more to say about this browser, so stay tuned.

Tools of the trade #4 : Dropbox – Secure backup, sync and sharing made easy

Dropbox(Windows,Mac,Linux) – is a cross-platform freeware application and web service that allows you to sync and backup files over the internet and to any computer.  You can start by getting the dropbox client installer from their website. After installing the client, the interface will prompt you if  you have an existing dropbox account or if you would like to register for an account. All in all the application is easy to setup and use. They even provided a guided tour of how to use it after you have installed the client on your computer. Once you get your account, using it for you backup and syncing needs will be just a breeze.

The application will create a default dropbox folder where you can put the files that you want to be synced online. Its like having your files anywhere you go, because all files you put in the dropbox folder will be automatically synced online. Initially you are given 2gb worth of storage for basic/free accounts, additional storage space will be provided for premium accounts. Note that dropbox is still in beta, but their initial offering is good enough for your basic needs.

When you need to retrieve a file from your “dropbox” even if you are away from your computer, you can use their web interface to access them easily. I would say that their web interface is very easy to use and you will have no trouble at all using it. If you want to have your files on another machine aside from your main computer, all you have to do is install the application and set it up like the way you did with your main pc. After installing and setting up dropbox on the new pc, your files on dropbox will be automatically synced on the new setup. You can also access the application’s basic functions via the dropbox tray icon.

For sharing files, you can designate a folder with the dropbox directory which you can share to others via a public link that will be automatically generated for files that are in the public folder.

Dropbox Public Folder

Another neat dropbox feature is for sharing photos wherein you only need to create a folder inside the photos folder and use the generated photo gallery link to share it to your friends. It will be viewable via a web interface.

So there you have it, a brief tour of Dropbox. You will be surprised how its simple functions can be of great use for the workplace.

Note: Referrals can get you an additional gigabyte of storage.
